NOTICE REGARDING 

PROPOSED PUBLIC ART PROJECT 

“ON THE MOVE”

ARTIST:  MONICA JAHAN BOSE

The art project ON THE MOVE proposes to create a hand-made ceramic tile mural at the exterior north stairwell wall of 1325 2nd St. NE, Washington, DC 20002 (owned by the Courtyard Marriott).  The stairwell is directly next to the Florida Avenue entrance to the NoMa/Gallaudet U Metro Station and leads to the Metropolitan Branch Trail (“MBT”), which is full of walkers, joggers, and people riding bicycles and scooters. The hand-painted tile mural would be a diptych and each would be approximately 4 ft. x 19 ft. in size along with additional plain tiles to cover the entire stairwell wall on both levels.  Bose is a Bangladeshi-American artist known for her fabric sari installations, and this will be a more permanent installation in ceramic. ON THE MOVE will be created using sari woodblocks, hand painting, and stenciled poetry. As part of the project, Bose will lead several community poetry and art workshops. ON THE MOVE speaks to the vibrant NoMa neighborhood and the diverse community that uses the MBT for recreation and going places. Bose will seek a public art grant from DCCAH; the completion of the project is contingent on the grant.

When: The project would be installed in Spring/Summer 2027.
